PERCUSSION STUDIO
MEETING TIME: 4th period, daily. Full year enrollment required, unless instructor approved. REQUIREMENTS: Students provide personal sticks and mallets for personal use: 1 pair of concert snare sticks, 1 pair marching sticks, 1 pair of general timpani mallets, 2 pair of medium yarn marimba mallets, 1 pair of hard rubber mallets, 1 pair of acrylic xylophone mallets, 2 - #2 pencils. 1 – 2” three ring binder and 1 package of dividers. CLASS DESCRIPTION: The percussion studio class is designed for percussion students only. All percussion students must register for this class, unless the student has written instructor permission not to.
The percussion studio is a quick-paced musical environment that is designed to offer every percussion student the opportunity to further develop individual percussive skills, ensemble techniques, and develop an understanding of music theory and music history as it relates to percussion. This class explores the language, skills, and materials of an artistic discipline.
COURSE SYLLABUS:
MARCHING PERCUSSION: Students enrolled in the percussion studio class during the fall semester make up the marching percussion aspect of the Black Hills High school competitive marching program. Individual instrumental placement in the marching percussion section is chosen by audition only. Those students who have either received written instructor permission to be excused from the marching percussion, or who have entered the class late and wish to not participate, are required to produce four projects to receive a passing grade for the fall semester. PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE: Percussion students are divided into different percussion ensembles based on skill level and experience to allow every percussion student the opportunity to showcase skills they have either developed or skills that are in the process of being developed. Each percussion ensemble performs appropriate percussion literature as a stand-alone music ensemble. Placement into any of the percussion ensembles is done by either instructor approval and/or audition process. SYMPHONIC BAND/CONCERT BAND PERCUSSION: Through out each semester, percussion students will be assigned symphonic band and concert band percussion parts. Percussion students are required to produce the percussion part given and perform the percussion part to receive a passing grade for the assignment. Class time will be used for rehearsal, not practice.GRADING: Students will be graded on the following in addition to the hrogram grading policies.
- Attendance and Participation.
- Adequate preparation of ensemble repertoire and percussion assignments.
- Participation in discussions during rehearsals indicative of reflective analysis of performance and understanding of the cultural, historic, and gender contexts of the works performed.
Note: All percussion students will be registered for 4th hour percussion for the 2008-2009 School year. NO EXCEPTIONS!
